“Native speaker” ≠ “Professional translator” It’s a common misconception in our industry: if someone is a native speaker of a language, they can automatically translate professionally. In reality, translation is a profession that requires far more than language fluency. A professional translator brings:• Specialized training in translation techniques• Deep understanding of cultural nuance and context• Subject-matter expertise (legal, medical, technical, marketing…)• Research skills and terminology management• Years of experience refining accuracy and style Being a native speaker is valuable, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.Just as speaking a language doesn’t make someone a writer, speaking two languages doesn’t automatically make someone a translator. Well trained professional translators can combine linguistic mastery with professional expertise to deliver translations that truly work in the target market. Because great translation is not just about words… it’s about meaning, intent, and impact!

Duolingo is a brilliant app. It’s well designed, it’s free (to a point). It’s gamified in a way that makes you feel like you’re making progress. And that’s the problem. Completing a level is not the same as learning a language. Translating “the cat is on the table” into Spanish for the fortieth time is not preparing you for a real conversation with a real person. Here’s what Duolingo does well: vocabulary exposure, basic pattern recognition, and keeping you in the habit of showing up. Genuinely, those things matter. Here’s what it doesn’t do: teach you to think in Spanish. Help you respond when someone speaks at normal speed. Prepare you for the moment a waiter asks “¿De primero?” and you have two seconds to reply. Language is not a quiz. It’s an interaction. You wouldn’t learn to drive by playing a driving simulator for three years and then expect to merge onto the M1, but that’s essentially what we’re doing when we treat an app as a substitute for conversation. I have students who arrive after two years of daily Duolingo with a 600 day streak and genuine dedication. They know hundreds of words. They can read sentences. But when I say “Cuéntame algo sobre tu fin de semana”, tell me about your weekend, they freeze. Because nobody has ever asked them to produce language under real-time pressure before. Duolingo isn’t the enemy. But it’s a warm-up, not the workout. If you’re using it, keep going, but add one real conversation a week. That’s where the actual learning happens. Agree or disagree? 

Is AI stealing translators’ jobs?” Every time a new technology appears, curiosity follows. People want to try it. Test it. See what it can do. That’s exactly what’s happening now with AI. But curiosity is not the same as replacement. AI can generate text.AI can suggest translations.AI can speed up certain processes. But AI cannot understand the real intention behind a message.AI cannot capture cultural nuance the way a human mind can.AI cannot build trust with a client who needs their words handled with care.Translation is not just about words.It’s about meaning, tone, responsibility, and context.So instead of fearing AI, translators should do something much more powerful: Keep their heads high and show their value. Show the expertise behind every carefully chosen word.Show the cultural intelligence behind every adaptation.Show the human judgment that no algorithm can replicate. AI may change the tools we use, but it doesn’t replace the professionals who know how to use them well. And the translators who understand this?They won’t disappear. They’ll stand out 💪❤️

Zážitok z výučby MALA SOM VČERA ÚŽASNÚ HODINU !!! ✌️ alebo ZA ČO SOM VĎAČNÁ KORPORÁTOM A SVOJEJ RODINE 💕 Poznáte ten pocit keď niekam idete po prvý-krát a máte sa stretnúť s niekým neznámym? Ja mávam hlavu plnú otáznikov a zvláštne “šteklene” v žalúdku. Včera som mala 1. hodinu slovenčiny, s Nemcom, ktorého profesijný jazyk je angličtina… 🧠 Stále keď s niekým začínam od nuly (samozrejme už pozná ahoj a pivo) je fajn vedieť vysvetliť veci v jazyku, ktorý je klientov pôvodný. A hoci naše hodiny majú byť ENG-SVK som rada, že viem aj po nemecky. Lebo vysvetliť niekomu pri nácviku výslovnosti spoluhlások čo je cvikla, ak nemá šajnu čo je “beetroot” ani že to je fialová koreňová zelenina, kt. sa u nás jedáva na Veľkú noc — dá zabrať. 🥕 Takže sme prešli na nemčinu 🙂 A keď sme tému uzavreli a ja som sa spýtala klienta , či má nejaké otázky alebo poznámky k výučbe povedal toto: “No viete, ja moc učebnice nemusím. A appky nemám rád — chýba im “človečina” Ale kúpil by som si slovník. Poradíte mi nejaký vreckový? 📖 Lebo aj keď som bol istý čas v Brazílii, učil som sa od ľudí na ulici. Stále som sa pýtal s pomocou slovníka a robil si doňho poznámky. ✏️ Nerád sa učím teóriu, plynulejšie a nenásilnejšie sa mi to zdá neustále precvičovať s miestnymi”. 😍 “A bolo vymalované !” Samozrejme, prešli sme na portugalčinu a zhodnotili spolu odlišnosti a príbuznosť vo výslovnosti v PORT a SJ. Za mňa paráda ! Budem mať viac práce bez podkladov ale aj si precvičím rôzne jazyky 🙂 😁👍

Dokáže Chat GPT nahradiť učiteľa? AI nahradí všetko ! Netreba nám učiteľov ani prekladateľov ! ChatBot je zdarma (hodina bola za 10 €) a využiť ho môžem kedy chcem ! Takýto voice-message som dnes dostala od klientky, ktorú som učila posledný polrok a neustále sa prispôsobovala jej možnostiam a náladám, často aj počas online hodiny…a zrušila aj ďalších desať hodín dohodnutých do konca roka. Samozrejme, ani za túto dnešnú nezaplatí — to iba agentúry si môžu pýtať úhradu v plnej výške pri zrušení kratšom ako 24 hod od LC od klienta. Práve tento víkend sme sa o tom ako sa k nám správajú klienti riešila s dvomi kolegyňami — jedna učí nemecký, tá druhá turecký jazyk. Koľkokrát sa snažíme urobiť možné aj nemožné, aby naši klienti boli spokojní…a pritom striehnu na každú chybu či zaváhanie, ktoré nám okamžite vytknú… Koľkokrát nezaplatia faktúru ani po 100 dňoch a výzvach… Koľkokrát požadujú šialené termíny (napr. od 21:30 alebo 5:30) a potom ich rušia na poslednú chvíľu — napr. preto lebo: “Došli mi stromky z Hornbachu musím ich ihneď zasadiť” (10 min. vopred) “Práve mi volala kozmetička, že má 20 min a spraví mi obočko” (7 min.) Koľkokrát tlačia cenu dole a nevnímajú kvalitu toho čo dostanú (však po anglicky už vie každý, čo mi už len Vy viete dať navyše?!) Nuž, na TU KE v Košiciach pred pár rokmi zrušili Katedru jazykov a prepustili všetkých skúsených pedagógov, ktorí mali zmluvne uložené spraviť si do 5 rokov PhD, publikovať, zúčastňovať sa konferencií aj medzinárodných projektov, neustále sa vzdelávať a využívať nové technológie… Keďže však nemal kto prekladať skriptá, monografie a práce určené na publikovanie a jazyková pripravenosť mnohých bola veľmi nízka — rozhodli sa zaviesť jazykovú výučbu do 3 rokov znova. Zvolili si však externých dodávateľov a platia im komerčné ceny — palec hore! Koľkokrát si sami platíme kurzy a semináre, aby sme vždy mohli ponúknuť pridanú hodnotu a byť “inn”…a snažíme sa stále usmievať bez ohľadu čo práve prežívame…. Náš zákazník, náš pán ?! Máte to tak aj Vy ?

Rozšírená inteligencia (IA) – úvaha Al mnohí z nás poznajú — ale poznáte aj IA? Nejde o umelú inteligenciu, od ktorej niektorí očakávajú že nahradí prácu ľudí, ale o ROZŠÍRENÚ INTELIGENCIU. Rozšírená inteligencia berie ako východiskový bod ľudskú inteligenciu a snaží sa ju podporovať prostredníctvom intuitívneho, no neinvazívneho používateľského rozhrania, ako sú hologramy alebo interaktívne vizualizácie. Už existujú príklady z praxe. Aj umelci využívajú rozšírenú inteligenciu. Generatívne adversariálne siete (GANs) môžu byť použité na tvorbu nových vizuálnych diel, zatiaľ čo rozpoznávanie vzorov môže pomôcť v analýze umeleckých trendov a preferencií divákov. Umelecké inštalácie, ktoré reagujú na pohyb alebo zvuk, sú tiež výsledkom spojenia umenia a rozšírenej inteligencie. Moja skúsenosť s AI Translator, ChatGPT, AI sú strojové preklady… odtienky významu, regionálne varinaty, básnické výrazy ako metafory, satiru či humor nepoznajú… “Look at him, that scoundrel, he vomited on my traditional leather shoes!” — lepší preklad nenájdete… je tam trochu pikantnosti aj historickosti, kt. vete v nárečí pristane… Ak chcete expresívnejší preklad:“Look at him, that bastard, he vomited on my traditional leather shoes!” Ak chcete neutrálny:“Look at him, that guy, he vomited on my traditional leather shoes!” Niet nad dobrého prekladateľa, kt. má nielen jazykový ale aj kultúrny a vôbec všeobecný rozhľad… A ja a jazyky ?SJ, ČJ, HU, RU, GER, ENG, PORT, ESP

Let’s think global IS RELOCATION A PROBLEM ?LET´S THINK, WORK & LIVE GLOBALLY 🙂 I am bilingual from birth and have studied English since I was 8.At school, I took on more languages. Thanks to my parents I travelled in/out of my country and due to my linguistic studies I spent every year in a different country at UNI.Life skills like packing all I need in a small space and in a short time and being creative when the bags get lost at airports proved an asset. I have worked as a teacher/lecturer with students from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds (e.g. of Hospitality & Tourism or Business) and travelled again. It led to carrier switch in travel management, tour ops, business trips, taylor-made & conference tourism.Learned a lot about client service and the nuances of the business 🙂 When Covid hit the world — travel became restricted — thus I switched again.Remote work for multinational corporates in teams of people from the whole world, interacting with them daily made me aware of different personal space, religion, access to problem solving or work pace… After some time, we learned how to exist under special measures and travel again became an option — including several business trips I hade to make…Flexibility, adaptability, clear communication, troubleshooting and Google planning became the key.So I continued opening windows on the world… With smartphones and wifi almost everywhere — GPS, booking portals, maps, opinion sharing on social media and photo/video presentations of venues — things got easier…however, we had to stay tunned and learn the know-how.Technology and AI appeared in our lives… And I switched again — to get a new perspective and a feeling of community with those who had to struggle — both among my people and beyond our borders…thanks to languages I speak. My degree in psychology & theory of communication help to build bridges with refugees, people fighting natural disasters or wars.Caritas, Red Cross, Muslims in Slovakia, Mareena — joined in need. Photography and blogging from my trips helped to create materials for fundraisings, events and projects in my position of a Marketing & PR manager.Plus I could go where I was needed — after his graduation, my son who BTW speaks languages and completed his studies in Scotland while travelling a lot too — found work & started life hundreds of kms from home. By the end of 2024 I became free for a new challenge — at work & life. IS RELOCATION A PROBLEM ??? LinkedIn offers remote work for international companies and also opportunities of on-site work…I applied for several positions related to my experience and almost always had to answer the question above… A firm “NO” was my answer in all cases — I would not apply otherwise!To book a flight and accommodation at Airbnb takes an hour.Pack a suitcase (washing = no problem) takes maybe two.Arranging things at home max. 48 hrsGet to the place of posting in 2/3 days — feasible!
